You're reading: Ukrainian, Bulgarian presidents hold meeting in Kyiv

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is currently meeting with President of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev who is on an official visit to Ukraine.

“The head of state expressed his gratitude to his Bulgarian colleague for reliable and constant support for Ukraine, which defends its independence and sovereignty,” the president’s press service reported.

“Thank you for upholding the position of Ukraine on the prolongation of sanctions, ensuring the energy independence of Ukraine and bilateral cooperation in the economic and military-technical sphere,” Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko thanked Bulgaria for supporting the European integration aspirations of Ukraine, in particular over the potential visa-free regime with the EU.

In turn, Plevneliev said Ukraine and Bulgaria have warm and friendly relations.

He said that both countries jointly defend the rule of law and the right of every nation to self-determination in the international arena.

“Each nation should determine its own future, territorial integrity and sovereignty independently. Bulgaria supports this right of the Ukrainian nation,” Plevneliev said.

He also stressed that Crimea is part of Ukraine.

Both leaders will discuss the situation in Donbas and the further steps required for the implementation of the Minsk agreements. Their talks will also cover economic, military-technical and humanitarian cooperation, in particular support for the Bulgarian minority in Ukraine.

Following the negotiations, Poroshenko and Plevneliev will release press statements.
