You're reading: Ukrainian Foreign Ministry: High number of VIP guests at Euro 2012 final shows failure of sports politicization

Five royalties, five presidents, two parliament speakers, four prime ministers and several members of foreign governments attended the final match of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship between the national teams of Spain and Italy in Kyiv on July 1.

An unprecedentedly large number of high guests in Ukraine during the
championship has clearly demonstrated that the idea of politicizing the
sports is unpopular in modern Europe, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry
said in a comment to Interfax-Ukraine on Sunday evening.

“Euro 2012 has shown Ukraine to the world as a truly European,
hospitable and tolerant country with a rich history and distinctive
culture,” the ministry said.

According to UEFA President Michel Platini, Ukraine and Poland
jointly “set high standards for the championship, which will not be easy
for others to achieve,” the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine said.
