KYIV - Kyiv will find the necessary mechanisms to hold Russia liable at the UN International Court of Justice, Ukrainian Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko says.

“We are working in the diplomatic field in order to use alternative mechanisms to hold Russia and individuals responsible for war crimes and Crimea’s illegal annexation liable. The matter concerns mechanisms related to the UN International Court of Justice. And I am sure together with the Foreign Ministry that we will be successful, because the entire international community supports our initiatives,” Petrenko said at a government meeting on Friday.

Ukraine has filed four lawsuits against Russia with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), in which human rights violations in Crimea and Donbas are mentioned, he said.

The Ukrainian Justice Ministry also helps Ukrainians prepare individual lawsuits to be filed with the ECHR, Petrenko said. “As many as 600 suits worked out by Ukrainian citizens together with the Justice Ministry have been filed with the European Court,” he said.
