New York, Sept. 22 (Interfax) - The New York-based Ukrainian diaspora has been banned from staging a protest against the policies of President Viktor Yanukovych, said a representative from the Ukrainian mission to the United Nations.

The police did not permit rallies near the [mission’s] building, he told journalists in New York on Wednesday.

Such a decision was due to the fact that this building is on the list of sites under increased protection during the UN General Assembly session.

Applications for rallies, which are currently being staged in great numbers in close proximity to the UN building, were submitted several months beforehand, the Ukrainian representative said.

The Ukrainian diaspora representatives must have applied too late, he said.
