The State Administration of Railway Transport of Ukraine (Ukrzaliznytsia) should ensure a high level of services for passengers, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

The presidential press service reported on Wednesday that the head of state had given a respective instruction to Ukrzaliznytsia Director General Volodymyr Kozak at a meeting in Crimea.

"We were tasked with doing everything possible to reduce expenditures on passenger transportation and simultaneously ensure in full the comfortable and high-quality transportation of passengers," Kozak said after the meeting with Yanukovych.

He said that the head of state had also ordered Ukrzaliznytsia to ensure all the needs of enterprises in the transportation of goods are met. He added that a respective program would be drafted soon at the request of the president.

"The country’s economy should work, and rail transport should not be a limiting factor in this process. In particular, it is necessary to draw up a program to upgrade rolling stock – the locomotives and wagons of Ukrzaliznytsia," Kozak said.
