LONDON — Lawmakers will question James Murdoch about his insistence he knew nothing of the phone hacking at his newspapers when he returns for a second grilling in Britain's Parliament on Thursday.

Although the senior News Corp. executive has said he did not know about the criminal culture whose exposure has humbled his company, mounting evidence suggests otherwise.

Murdoch has repeatedly told lawmakers he wasn’t aware of the widespread wrongdoing when he approved a massive settlement meant to put a lid on the scandal back in 2008.

But that assertion has been challenged by former employees, three top lawyers and sheafs of documentary evidence.

Media commentator and ex-tabloid editor Paul Connew said Wednesday he believed Murdoch was preparing to offer some kind of apology.
