OSLO - Norway said on March 26 it was closing its embassy in Damascus because of the worsening security conditions in Syria.

Several Western and Arab countries have closed their embassies in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad is fighting a revolt against his rule.

A Norwegian diplomat will stay in the Syrian capital to maintain contacts with "political actors and report on the situation in the country", Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement. The diplomat will be attached to the Danish embassy.
