Georgia will reopen its land borders on June 1, consistent with the decision of the Interagency Coordination Council for the containment of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Georgia will reopen its land borders on June 1, and it will be possible to cross the border with a certificate of full vaccination for Covid-19 and a negative PCR test or a negative PCR test taken at least 72 hours before arrival,” head of the Interagency Coordination Council’s operative headquarters Giorgi Gibradze said.

All visitors will be recommended to have a medical insurance policy.

Georgia closed its air, land, and sea borders on March 21, 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The restrictions did not apply to cargo, charter, repatriation, humanitarian, or technical flights.

As the epidemiological situation improved, Georgia lifted restrictions on regular international flights on February 1, 2021.

Georgia had 1,749,300 foreign visitors in 2020, or 5.3 times less than the year before, including 1,088,700 tourists (4.7 times less). Revenue from inbound tourism, which is a key sector of the national economy, stood at $541.7 million in 2020, or six times less than in 2019.

The tourism industry’s standing did not improve in January-April 2021, as Georgia had 220,500 foreign visitors over the first four months of the year, or 6.1 times less than in January-April 2020.
