Michel calls Protasevich’s family to express solidarity on EU’s behalf

Belarusian journalist and activist Roman Protasevich, 26, appears in an undated video released by a Belarusian Telegram channel and shared on the Belarus state TV. In the video, Protasevich reads out what appears to be a forced confession of organizing mass protests in Belarus.

President of the European Council Charles Michel on Wednesday called the family of Roman Protasevich, a Belarusian journalist and activist detained in Minsk, to express solidarity to them on behalf of the European Union.

“I just called Dmitry Protasevich to express the EU’s fullest solidarity with the Protasevich family and my deep empathy as a father. I reiterate the EU’s call on Belarus authorities to immediately release his son Roman, Sofia Sapega, as well as all political prisoners,” Michel wrote on Twitter on May 26.
