You're reading: Moldova declares ‘code red’ for coronavirus almost nationwide

The epidemiological risk “code red” has been introduced across all of Moldova except for three regions where “code orange” remains in place, the country’s Health Ministry said on September 21.

The country has seen a significant rise in Covid-19 cases, the statement said.

Last week, September 13-19, new cases totaled 6,888, up 50% on the previous week. Thus, the average number of infections rose from 656 between September 5 and 12 to 984 from September 13 to 19. Last week, daily cases topped 1,000 for several days for the first time since May.

According to the ministry, most cases (84.3%) are mild or asymptomatic; moderate ones account for 9.9% and severe, 5.8%.

Current infections stand at 7,999 and 1,756 people with the confirmed infection are hospitalized; 124 of them are critical and eleven are on artificial ventilation. In all, since the pandemic started, 282,650 have been infected, of whom 268,046 recovered and 6,605 died.

Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, 1,363,602 people have been vaccinated, including more than 750,000 with both doses.
