You're reading: 6 world fashion icons promote Ukrainian designers in 2017

Rihanna and Monica Bellucci, Demi Moore and Pamela Anderson — these and many more top celebrities wore Ukrainian brands in 2017. Ukrainian stylist Ania Hryshenko thinks that the reason for such attention is the political situation in Ukraine, with international news dominated by war, corruption and protest.

“Everyone is like: ‘What is this country? What’s going on there?’” she says.

Also, Hryshenko says that more Ukrainian designers are showing up at fashion contests abroad, which also contributes to more attention.

The Kyiv Post has picked some of the most interesting examples of world celebrities showing off Ukrainian designs.

Rihanna in Marianna Senchina

Pop icon Rihanna wore Ukrainian designer Marianna Senchina to the presentation of her new make-up brand Fenty Beauty. She showed up in a pink-and-white off-the-shoulder floral dress with bows for the red carpet in Madrid, Spain, in September.

Senchina told Ukrainian media that after she presented her collection at the Mercedes-Benz Kyiv Fashion Days, a stylist working for Rihanna and model Bella Hadid reached out to her and asked for several outfits. Marianna Senchina was listed among 10 emerging designers by Vogue Italia this year.
