‘The Nutcracker’

There are two places in Kyiv where you can be transported to the fairytale world of “The Nutcracker,” a Christmas ballet classic with the famous music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The two-act ballet staged by the Ukrainian choreographer Valeriy Kovtun will be performed live at the National Opera several times during the winter holidays. For those who want a more Western take on the Russian classic, Kyiv Cinema offers a recording of the performance by the British Royal Opera House, staged by Peter Wright. Both are full of that special Christmas cheer.

‘Vanishing Without a Trace’

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the current exhibition at Kyiv’s Nebo Art Gallery before it ends on Dec. 31. “Vanishing Without a Trace” features graphics by Ukrainian artist Romana Ruban. Her artworks depict endangered and extinct animal and plant species, while the artists explores the line between the two statuses. Ruban also raises the question whether humans will disappear after ruining the environment.

Christmas Jazz Songs – Greatest Hits

Kyiv’s Old Fashioned Band will present a jazz music show dedicated to Christmas on Dec. 26. The band’s musicians will perform the greatest hits of world-famous jazz musicians like Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, including “Silent Night”, “Jingle Bells”, “Let It Snow” and many other traditional Christmas songs. The Christmas Jazz Songs show will hit the stage of the House of Architects of Ukraine in Kyiv, on Dec. 26.

‘The Madness of George III’

A recording of the multi-award-winning drama “The Madness of George III” will be screened in Kyiv cinemas. Based on the play by English writer Alan Bennett, it depicts the late years of the King of Great Britain George III, who reigned in 1760–1820: As he was battling a mental illness, the king’s opponents tried to undermine his power. The play stars English actor and screenwriter Mark Gatiss as George III.
