You're reading: At least 30 percent of songs in Ukrainian to be played on radio from November 8

The share of Ukrainian-language songs on the radio should grow from 25 percent to 30 percent from Nov. 8.

The next stage of the introduction of the bill on the quotas of Ukrainian-language songs and programs on the radio begins in Ukraine on Nov. 8. The rule stipulated in the transitional provisions of law No. 1421-VIII on amending certain laws of Ukraine on the share of musical works in the state language in the programs of television and radio broadcasting organizations comes into force.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Viacheslav Kyrylenko stated on Nov. 7 that the radio audience had significantly increased over the first year of the introduction of the Ukrainian quotas.

“From November 8, the quota for songs in Ukrainian on the radio grows from 25 percent to 30 percent. However, radio stations exceed this quota now. On average in the country the share of songs in the Ukrainian language on radio stations is 32 percent. It is very gratifying that the quota is fulfilled regardless of the region. This shows that the norms laid down in the law are absolutely natural. It is good for a country when Ukrainian listeners can hear songs in Ukrainian,” the website detector.media quoted Kyrylenko as saying.

He also said that “the radio audience increased, rather than decreased, and no radio station ceased to exist because of quotas.”

In addition, from Nov. 8, 2017, the share of programs, including news, analytical or entertainment programs, should reach at least 55% (previously the quota was 50 percent).

According to the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting, in October this year, the quota of Ukrainian songs on Ukrainian radio stations averaged 32 percent, while the share of programs in the state language was 81 percent.
