The U.S. streaming service and production company Netflix has partnered with two Ukrainian dubbing studios, Postmodern Postproduction and Tak Treba Production, according to a press statement on Sept. 21 by Film.Ua Group, the parent company of both studios.
The studios recently appeared on Netflix’s list of partners, and they will provide Ukrainian-language dubbing services for Netflix’s English-speaking content.
Since Netflix rolled out its platform in Ukraine in 2016, only several films and TV series offered Ukrainian subtitles, while none of the products were available with Ukrainian dubs. Now, however, Netflix will become more accessible to Ukrainians that don’t know English.
The deal has been reached under the Netflix Post Partner Program, through which the company collaborates with post-production players internationally in a number of fields that include language dubbing, audio descriptive services, branded content quality control and more.
Both of the Ukrainian dubbing studios have been in the production business for over 15 years.
According to Postmodern Postproduction, they have dubbed hundreds of films for major studios worldwide. Some of their recent works include action thriller “Tenet” and action comedy “The Gentlemen.”
In 2017, one Ukrainian registered a petition asking Netflix in Ukraine as well as its competitor Amazon Prime Video (which is not officially operating in Ukraine) to provide dubbing and subtitles in Ukrainian. Since then, the petition published on the Change.org platform has been signed by over 94,000 people.
Earlier in July, Ukraine’s Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko announced that Netflix will shoot its first movie in Kyiv. The action-comedy “The Last Mercenary” will star Belgian-born actor and bodybuilder Jean-Claude Van Damme.
