Tuborg fest brings Placebo, David Guetta and Faithless to Kyiv; Annual Chayka music fest to be held this weekend

Tuborg Green Fest, a European music festival, will be taking place for the first time in Ukraine this June, but is already planned to become an annual event. The musicians to perform at the fest are world famous performers – Placebo, David Guetta, and Faithless.

The first to play is extravagant British band Placebo, which, in addition to its own albums, produced the soundtrack to the teen flick “Cruel Intentions.” Popularity came to the alternative glam rock band in 1996 with the release of the albums “Placebo” and “Without You I’m Nothing.” Since then, the band, though mocked for the pretentious and androgynous image of its vocalist Brian Molko, keeps topping world charts, and is coming to Ukraine with its latest album “Meds.”

Fans of electro-funk-house music surely don’t want to miss the show of French deejay David Guetta, the king of Paris nightlife, whose albums are compared to the best works of Depeche Mode by critics. Having started his career behind the turntables at the age of 13, he is now a welcome guest at the best night clubs of Ibiza, the US, and Europe.

The third performer on the program is also connected with club music – it’s British trio Faithless. One of its members, Sister Bliss, has already played a deejay set in Kyiv. The musicians call their music a cross between hip-hop and dance. Mainly known for their hits “Insomnia,” “God Is a DJ,” and “We Come 1,” the musicians have already released more than nine albums and compilations and played at famous dance clubs around the world.

One of the biggest Ukrainian music fests, the Chayka (“Seagull”) international music festival, will be held in Kyiv for the ninth time. Since it first appeared, the festival has changed its location several times, and this year it’s going to take place at the Expocenter of Ukraine. As usual, the gigs will take place all day long on two stages: on the “Youth Stage,” intended for young musicians, and on the “International Stage,” for the famous stars. When the concert program comes to an end, guests will be able to go dancing in the Disco Party Tent.

The number of young artists taking part in Chayka has greatly increased. This year, a group of experts comprised of such music celebrities as Oleh Skrypka, Dilya, Yuriy Khustochka and others, chose 10 young artists – out of the 190 who applied – to participate. The 10 choices include Abzdolts, Dyversanty, Sontseklyosh, Dymna Sumish, Da Bitt, Propala Hramota, Fayno, Bionik, The Meantraitors, Mors, 7’th Day and Marakesh.

While in terms of young musicians, Chayka usually stays on the alternative side, there are often pop bands among the main stars of the fest. This year, however, the fest organizers clearly concentrated on rock and alternative music.

The “International Stage” will host Kyiv band TOL, known for its depressive sound and lyrics. A real Chayka veteran hip-hop and rock band, Tartak, is going to present a new exclusive program with a much heavier sound than usual. A guest from Russia, alternative musician Delfin, who also isn’t new to Chayka, will give his third performance at the festival.

Delfin is a welcome guest in Kyiv. During his last Kyiv concert at Art Club 44, he was greeted by five hundred excited fans. Another Russian star, veteran rocker Vyacheslav Butusov, the former leader of the band Nautilus-Pompilius, which enjoyed a smashing success in the 80s, is coming to perform with U-Piter. The third artist on the list of Russian performers is Leningrad, whose scandalous reputation is well matched by their immense popularity. However the real headliners of this year’s Chayka fest are neither Ukrainians nor Russians, but the British punk-rockers Exploited.
