The Ukrainian movie “Black Level” will compete for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2018 Oscars.

The Ukrainian Oscar Committee, which chose the drama to represent Ukraine at the Academy Awards, announced its decision on its Facebook page on Aug. 29.

Directed by Ukrainian screenwriter and director Valentyn Vasianovych, “Black Level” is a documentary-feature drama telling the story of a 50-year-old wedding photographer facing the prospect of losing everything he has ever loved.

The film was premiered on July 17 at the Odesa International Film Festival, where it won a prize from the International Federation of Film Critics as the best Ukrainian feature film.

The 90th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
