You're reading: Ukrainian musician provides soundtrack for ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ reboot

These days, creative talent from Ukraine can be found almost everywhere, even in TV shows focused on the star-studded community of Beverly Hills, California.

Most recently, a new track composed by Kyiv-based electronic music artist Cape Cod has become the soundtrack for the series finale of a long-awaited reboot of the iconic U.S. TV drama “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

The song “Sunsay” plays during the last episode of the new comedy-drama television series in an episode called “The Long Wait.” It was aired on Sept. 11, 2019.

In his songs, Maksim Sikalenko, widely known as Cape Cod, combines electronic music with soul, disco, funk, and neo-jazz motifs to create new sounds.

“Sunsay” was created in cooperation with a musician from Ireland, Richard Farrell, who recorded vocals for Sikalenko’s track.

According to Sikalenko, the fact that his song became one of the soundtracks for the legendary TV series was an “absolute surprise” to him.

“It’s hard to describe the boundless feeling of pure euphoria when the song you wrote suddenly appears in one of the most important TV series of your youth,” Sikalenko wrote in an Instagram post.

“Beverly Hills, 90210” was one of the most popular U.S. TV series of the nineties, especially with teens. It ran for about 10 years, from 1990 till 2000.

It shows the lives of a group of friends who live in Beverly Hills, California.

The reboot of “Beverly Hills, 90210” premiered on August 7, 2019. It focuses on the friends’ reunion 19 years after the original series.

“BH90210” features six-episodes starring Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and more.

Sikalenko says having the song played during the TV series was a complex procedure. The musician gave legal rights for his songs to a Ukrainian music agent – Be Management Music & Publishing that added these songs to an international music database.

After that, the production staff of the TV series selected what it needed from a huge number of songs available in the database.

Sikalenko says that a week before the release of the last episode, the music publishing company told him that the creators of the TV series wanted to use his song for one of the episodes.

And when Sikalenko finally heard his song playing on the show, he began jumping up and down out of happiness and immediately called his fiancee to share the great news, he says.

Sikalenko, who collaborates with musicians from all over the globe, says that Ukraine has a huge amount of world-class, unique and cool music.

“Perhaps everything does not happen as fast as we would like, but the process is ongoing and it’s great,” Sikalenko says.
