Every year on the third Thursday of May Ukrainians and the country’s friends celebrate International Vyshyvanka Day.

Vyshyvanka is a Ukrainian traditional embroidered shirt worn by both men and women. It is also a fashionable clothing item popular all over the world.

The list of vyshyvanka fans includes such fashion icons as the vocalist from the English indie rock band Florence and the Machine, Florence Welch, U.S. actress Demi Moore, burlesque dancer, model and actress Dita Von Teese.

On May 17, Ukrainian lawmakers, musicians and TV hosts, as well as foreigners living in Ukraine have worn vyshyvankas to celebrate the holiday.

Ukrainian singer Jamala who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016 posted a picture wearing vyshyvanka dress by Ukrainian designer Vita Kin.

“Happy Vyshyvanka Day, friends! Vyshyvanka is an amazingly beautiful outfit. Do you agree?” she wrote in the Instagram post.

Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Ryabchin has posted a photograph of him wearing a white embroidered shirt and his parliament colleague Alyona Schkrum wearing the red embroidered dress.

Ukrainian singer Tatyana Reshetnyak, better known as Tayanna, shared a picture of her wearing a dress with geometric embroidery.

“Happy Vyshyvanka Day,” her Instagram post reads.

Lawmaker Serhii Leshchenko has worn a traditional design of vyshyvanka – white shirt with red embroidery.

The staff of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine gathered for a group picture – all wearing vyshyvankas.

TV host of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Ukraine in 2017 Timur Miroshnychenko shared a photo of him and his wife wearing traditional clothing by Ukrainian brand Foberini.

The staff of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine also joined the celebration.

Ukrainian singer Dmitry Shurov, better known as Pianoboy, posted a selfie of him and his wife.

“Happy Intergalactic Vyshyvanka Day,” his post reads.

British ambassador for Ukraine Judith Gough shared a video where she talks to Olenka Didyk from Ukrainian Institute of Fashion History about the origins of vyshyvanka. In the video, the ambassador wears vyshyvanka.

TV presenter at 1+1 channel Marichka Padalko hosted a news program wearing a blue vyshyvanka shirt.
