A junior hockey team from the Canadian province of Manitoba, the Dauphin Kings, has hit the headlines on local and Ukrainian news websites – but not just because they won a game.

The Dauphin Kings showed up at the ice rink at Ruff’s Furniture in Dauphin on Jan. 28 in front of 1,700 fans dressed in a uniform styled on Ukraine’s traditional embroidered shirt – the vyshyvanka.

Moreover, the players came onto the ice under the sabers of two men dressed as Ukrainian Cossacks – self-governing communities who lived in Ukraine from the 14th to 18th centuries. The Kings’ players’ arrival on the ice was announced in Ukrainian by local teacher Stephen Jaddock.
