The Prosecutor General’s Office in Russia is investigating the legality of the 1991 declarations of independence by the Baltic former Soviet republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Such pronouncements are greeted in the West as more attempts by the
Kremlin to intimidate – and possibly annex – its neighbors, just as
Russia did in March 2014 with Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.
