U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Jan. 28. On that same day, the Russian-separatist forces started an assault on Avdiyivka, a frontline city in Donetsk Oblast held by the Ukrainian army. The assault went on for days and was the biggest escalation in months, killing at an estimated 20 people.
