Drivers in Ukrainian capital Kyiv had more reason than usual to complain on April 9 as some 10,000 runners – and their fans –  took to the streets for the city’s annual half-marathon.

Each year the race has seen growth in the number of participants and the amount of prize money on offer.  This year Hr 146,000 ($5,400) went to first placed runner Anbesa Lencho from Ethiopia who also set a new record for the course. It took him just shy of an hour and four minutes to cover the 21.09 kilometer distance. His compatriot Belaynesh Beyene finished first in the women’s category.
