More than 1,000 people came to the building of Ukrainian parliament on June 7 to protest the sale of agricultural land.

Agricultural land in Ukraine became private property in 2001 and almost immediately was banned for sale. The moratorium expires on Jan. 1, 2018, and the parliament, encouraged by the International Monetary Fund,  is expected to allow the land sale.

Some are afraid that with no cheap loans available in Ukraine, the land will be purchased by big landlords and corporations, leaving no chance for regular Ukrainians to buy farming land.

The protesters held flags and banners of Agrarian Party, a small political force that doesn’t have representation in parliament.
