Ukraine’s Usyk spars in Kyiv ahead of Rodgriguez bout

Ukrainian boxers Oleksandr Usyk (8-0, 8KO) and Denys Berinchyk (2-0, 2KO) held an open training session at the Kiko sports club in Kyiv on Nov. 25.

Usyk, a gold medalist and an undefeated cruiserweight from Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, trained ahead of his bout with Pedro Rodriguez (22-1, 19KO). The undefeated Usyk will fight his Cuban opponent in Kyiv’s Sports Palace on Dec. 12. Last month, Usyk, a native of Simferopol in Crimea, was named the World Boxing Organization’s “intercontinental fighter of the year at the professional boxing sanctioning body’s convention in Florida on Oct. 27. He won the heavyweight gold medal in the 2012 London Summer Olympics, becoming the third Olympic boxing gold medalist in Ukraine’s history, joining Wladimir Klitschko and Vasyl Lomachenko.

Berinchyk took the silver medal in the light-welterwidght category in London the same year.
