Protesters call for arresting lawmaker charged with theft

Activists brought aluminum mugs - a hint at a convict's lifestyle - to a rally for lawmaker Oleksandr Onyshchenko's arrest on July 4.

About 30 activists held a rally on July 4 for the arrest of Oleksandr Onyshchenko, a Verkhovna Rada member from the People’s Will faction charged with embezzlement.

The Verkhovna Rada will consider permitting the prosecution and arrest of Onyshchenko on July 5. However, it is not clear if he is in Ukraine.

According to his Instagram, Onyshchenko was in Moscow on July 3.

Onyshchenko is accused of running a Hr 3 billion ($120 million) embezzlement scheme linked to state-owned gas producer Ukrgazvydobuvannya.
