Houses can be ready as soon as after several months of placing the order and can cost around 500 euro per square meter.

Finnish log houses are popular in Ukraine for their style and because the materials suit the Ukrainian climate – durable, cool in the summer yet warm in the winter.

“The wood creates a special micro climate,” said Irina Kolodiy, director of Green-House, the Ukrainian representative of Finland’s Kontio, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of log houses.

Traditional Finnish log houses are small, around 150 square meters in total. Ukrainian customers generally order larger, more modern designs – room sizes can be customized – which are about 200 or 250 square meters, said Kolodiy.

The owner of Green House, Aleksandr Golovin, founded the company in 2001, after falling in love with the Kontio house he built for his family.

The company is the biggest distributor and constructor of Finnish houses in Ukraine and even maintains the houses at the client’s request.

“The materials take three and a half months to arrive. A 200 square meter house takes around four months to build. So a person can effectively move into their house within seven months of placing their order,” Irina Kolodiy, a director at Green House, told the Kyiv Post.

The building material set costs from 500 euro per square meter.

The appeal of Kontio houses, according to Kolodiy, is the quality of the timber which comes from the slow-growing northern forests of Finland. It has a dense fiber structure and a large core which makes for excellent building material, said Kolodiy.
