After Shakhtar Donetsk crashed out of the prestigious UEFA Champions League soccer tournament on March 13, losing to Italy’s Roma, Ukrainians had hoped Dynamo Kyiv would continue to represent Ukraine on the international soccer stage in the UEFA Europa League. But the Kyiv club was beaten in the last sixteen.

Italian club Lazio knocked Dynamo Kyiv out of the tournament, winning 0-2 in Kyiv on March 15 in the second leg of their final-16 tie. Dynamo recorded an away 2-2 draw in the first leg, but lost 4-2 on aggregate. The win takes Lazio through to the quarter-finals.

Lucas Leiva and Stefan de Vrij scored in each half of the match. Leiva scored a header from the left side of the six yard box to the top right corner – the first away goal for Lazio. Then  de Vrij hit a left-footed shot from very close range into the bottom left corner of the Dynamo goal, which turned out to be the winner.

No Ukrainian clubs remain in European football competitions this year.

Meanwhile, the Union of European Football Associations, or UEFA, has started selling tickets for the Champions League final , which will be held on May 26 in Kyiv. People can apply for tickets online until March 22. Prices start at 70 euros.
