On Sept. 16, dozens of journalists and activists came to Independence square to honor the memory of Georgiy Gongadze, the Ukrainska Pravda co-founder who was murdered on this date in 2000.
They brought posters showing Gongadze’s silhouette and a sign saying “In the beginning there was the word” along with candles which they lit up to honor the murdered journalist.
The murder remains unsolved. Ex-President Leonid Kuchma, his ex-chief of staff Volodymyr Lytvyn an other former top officials remain suspects. One high-ranking suspect, ex-Interior Minister Yuriy Kravchenko, was found dead, shot twice in the head on March 4, 2005, before he was scheduled to give testimony.
Ex-police general Oleksiy Pukach has been convicted of the crime along with three of his subordinate police officers.
