As Ukraine marked 82 years since the Stalin-era Holodomor famine, one of the darkest pages in its history that left millions dead, residents and guests of Kyiv turned out to a ceremony to commemorate the victims on Nov 28.

The 1932-33 famine took place
as harvests dwindled and Soviet leader Josef Stalin’s police enforced
the brutal collectivization of agriculture by requisitioning grain
and other foodstuffs.
