The first day of school in Ukraine is usually celebrated on Sept. 1. But because it fell on Sunday this year, many schools moved the celebration to Monday, Sept. 2.

The Ivan Bohun Kyiv Military Lyceum wasn’t one of them. It stuck with tradition and opened its doors to cadets aged 13 to 16 on the first day of fall.

But this academic year will be a special one for the lyceum. For the first time in its 27-year history, it will also educate girls.

Previously, the lyceum only accepted boys. However, that changed once the Minister of Defense began implementing a gender equality policy. The ministry wants to create equal opportunities for both men and women in the military field.

By the end of this academic year, 300 cadets will graduate from the lyceum. Most of them will enter military institutions of higher education.
