Dozens of demonstrators on May 11 protested against Interior Minister Arsen Avakov in front of the Interior Ministry building in Kyiv.

The activists demanded Avakov’s resignation due to a brutal riot police crackdown on Ukrainian veterans of Russia’s war against Ukraine and pro-Ukrainian activists in Dnipro on May 9. Some of the veterans, who protested against a pro-Russian event in honor of World War II, were heavily injured during clashes with riot police and pro-government thugs known as “titushki.”

Reacting to the scandal, Avakov on May 10 fired Dnipro Oblast Police Chief Repeshko and Dnipro Police Chief Bidylo. Repeshko was replaced with Vitaly Hlukhoverya, who also triggered a controversy after a photo of him wearing a t-shirt with a “USSR” inscription emerged.
