No one hurt as empty kindergarten gets shelled in Debaltseve

DEBALTSEVE, Ukraine -- Kremlin-backed insurgents on Jan. 22 struck an empty kindergarten in Debaltseve rather than their presumed target of a Ukrainian military field command center nearby. Ukrainian servicemen assisted in taking out new equipment from the damaged building so that the items would not be looted. The kindergarten was recently repaired.

Kyiv Post editor Maxim Tucker writes: “Smashed glass littered small beds where children once took their afternoon naps, now ripped apart and thrown across the room. Ukrainian missiles roared overhead, seeking vengeance on the rebel Grad launchers, exploding several miles away in a series of flat, powerful thuds. Fortunately the kindergarten’s children had been evacuated overnight as Debaltseve residents fled the city.”
