Nearly 25 years after the breakup of the Soviet Union, Ukraine still hasn't gotten rid of thousands of monuments and other reminders of the 70-year era.In Kyiv, there are at least 10 statues of Vladimir Lenin others of Soviet military commanders, including Nikolai Vatutin.Although activists toppled more than 500 monuments of Lenin in 2014, still some 1,700 statues are left - mostly in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts. But Ukraine's Parliament has taken aim at purging the country of Soviet-era symbols, with passage of decommunization laws by the Verkhovna Rada on April 9.The monuments may soon end up in a special museum, according to Volodymyr Vyatrovych, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. The Soviet-era theme park will let visitors feel the oppressive power of Soviet architecture.
