Thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets on Oct. 14 to celebrate the newly introduced Defenders' Day holiday. Ukrainian nationalist activists and supporters, including those from the Right Sector ultra-nationalist organization and the Svoboda nationalist party, held a march to commemorate those who have fought for Ukraine's independence. A number of veterans of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) also joined the march, which led from Mykhaylivska Square along Velyka Vasylkivska Street to the Lukyanivske detention facility in Kyiv.A number of Svoboda party members were detained following an incident outside parliament in Kyiv on Aug. 31, in which a grenade was thrown at police guarding the legislature from massed protesters. Four national guardsmen died as a result of the attack, and dozens were injured.
