Ukraine still has no gold medal in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. But some top Ukrainian athletes have already shown great performances and brought three medals to Ukraine.
On Aug. 8, fencer Olga Kharlan won bronze in the women’s individual sabre competition.
The same day Serhiy Kulish brought silver to Ukraine by winning the 10-meter air rifle competition.
Gymnast Oleg Verniaiev also won silver in men’s individual all-around final of artistic gymnastics on Aug. 10, dropping only 0.0099 points to the gold winner Japan’s Kohei Uchshimura
But it was Elina Svitolina, a 21-year-old Ukrainian tennis player from Kharkiv, who produced the biggest shock in the Olympic tennis competition so far by beating U.S. tennis legend Serena Williams.
