Christmas celebrations begin on Kyiv’s Sofiivska Square (PHOTOS)

As the winter holidays get underway across Ukraine, lasting until early January, many revelers have come into central Kyiv to see what has been described as one of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas trees this year.

On Dec. 24, as many people around the world gear up to celebrate Christmas, families and tourists enjoyed a sprawling market as celebrations spread across Sofiivska Square in the city center.

This year, the square that sits at the foot of the iconic, Ukrainian Orthodox cathedral of St. Sophia, is welcoming visitors with food courts, entertainment and a market, as well as dazzling light decorations.

Additionally, Sofiivska Square will host multiple live music shows, entertaining Kyiv citizens and visitors. Traditionally, the New Year celebration at Sofiivska Square in Kyiv will be held on Dec. 31, where all will gather to celebrate the beginning of 2019. The Christmas and New Year celebration at Sofiivska Square will be held till Jan. 13, as most Ukrainians celebrate a later Christmas, in line with their Orthodox Christianity.
