AVDIYIVKA, Ukraine — Ukrainian combat units from the 72nd Mechanized Brigade continue to block the advance of Russian-backed forces on the outskirts of Avdivyivka, a frontline city some 600 kilometers southeast of Kyiv.

Fierce combat goes on almost daily for control of the devastated industrial zone at the city’s southern edge, known as the Promzona. The opposing sides’ positions are just a few tens of meters away from each other, and they regularly clash among the ruins of former factories and workshops. The Promzona sits on the strategic high ground, granting fire control over the nearby major road and blocking the Russian-backed forces’ further advance into Avdiyivka itself.
