People plunged into a cross-shaped hole cut in the ice in the Dnipro River near Vyshhorod, just north of Kyiv, on Jan. 19, as part of the celebration of Orthodox Christian Epiphany. The religious festival commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
