Thousands of Ukrainians wore vyshyvanka, a traditional embroidered shirt, to celebrate Vyshyvanka Day on May 21.

Although Vyshyvanka Day is not an official holiday
in Ukraine, it was supported by people in many cities of Ukraine, including Odesa,
Uzhhorod, Sumy, Ternopil and others.

More
than 4,500 participants posted photos of themselves wearing vyshyvankas to
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Dozens
of Ukrainian lawmakers and representatives of the local authorities joined the initiative.

The holiday is very special for Chernivtsi, where Vyshyvanka Day was founded in 2007 by Lesia Voroniuk, a student of Chernivtsi
University. It started as a student’s initiative in 2007 and developed into
international holiday, celebrated by Ukrainians and Ukrainian diaspora around the world.
