ISTANBUL — The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I in his residence in Istanbul has signed a decree, or “tomos,” on Jan. 5 granting autocephaly for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, marking a historic split from Russian Orthodox Church. The creation of an Orthodox church in Ukraine ends more than 300 years of Moscow domination.
On Jan. 6, Patriarch Bartholomew I will transfer the “tomos” document to Metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine Epiphany, who will bring it to Kyiv.

The ceremony is attended by the head of the newly formed Ukrainian church Yepifaniy, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy, ex-President Victor Yushchenko and Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak.
