Hromadske: Ukraine church becomes officially independent (VIDEO)

ISTANBUL — The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I in his residence in Istanbul has signed a decree, or “tomos,” on Jan. 5 granting autocephaly for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, marking a historic split from Russian Orthodox Church. The creation of an Orthodox church in Ukraine ends more than 300 years of Moscow domination.

On Jan. 6, Patriarch Bartholomew I will transfer the “tomos” document to Metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine Epiphany, who will bring it to Kyiv.

Hromadske International has provided live video of the Jan. 5 ceremony in Istanbul. The ceremony is attended by the head of the newly formed Ukrainian church Yepifaniy, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy, ex-President Victor Yushchenko and Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak.
