Hromadske: Muslims and Jews in Crimea

The Jewslim Orchestra band appeared after the annexation of Crimea. It combines two musical cultures: Crimean Tatar and Jewish. Muslims and Jews in the Crimea lived in harmony and mutual assistance, and when things got tough, they rescued one another. During World War II, the Crimean Tatars pretended Jewish children were their own so that they would not be taken to concentration camps.

The joint hromadske and LSE research project “For East and West” sets out to explore Ukrainians’ attitudes to history: in this case how the two cultures coexisted in peace on the peninsula.
