"I strongly believe that the constructive partnership between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will develop in future based on trust and mutual understanding. I hope that I will have the opportunity to meet with you in May this year during NATO’s summit in Chicago to discuss important cooperation issues," reads the letter.

Yanukovych wished Rasmussen "good health, family well-being, and success in responsible international activities."

Rasmussen marks his 59th birthday on Jan. 26. He has been NATO secretary general since Aug. 1, 2009.

As reported, earlier the head of the presidential administration, Serhiy Liovochkin, reported that Yanukovych had been invited to attend NATO’s summit in Chicago in May 2012.

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine, in turn, stated: "We very much hope that next year’s NATO summit in Chicago will provide impetus to the deepening of cooperation between Ukraine and the alliance… Of course, we will continue to see NATO as our strategic partner in the sphere of security, reform of the armed forces, and in the sphere of tackling the consequences of emergencies."
