Ivano-Frankivsk, March 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council has called on the European Parliament to review clause 20 of its resolution on the situation in Ukraine, which deplores former Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko's decision to posthumously award Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, the title of Hero of Ukraine.

The council said this in an address to the European Parliament passed at an extraordinary session on Mar. 3.

All of the 68 deputies who attended the meeting voted for the adoption of the address.

"We, the deputies of Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council, are asking the European Parliament to review clause 20 of its resolution," reads the statement.

The deputies also decided to send the address to Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych, the Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers, as well as the embassies of European Union countries in Ukraine.

As reported, the European Parliament, in its resolution passed on February 25, said that it "deeply deplores the decision by the outgoing President of Ukraine, Viktor Yuschenko, to posthumously award Stepan Bandera, a leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), which collaborated with Nazi Germany, the title of ‘National Hero of Ukraine.’"

In this regard, the European Parliament expressed hope that "the new Ukrainian leadership will reconsider such decisions and will maintain its commitment to European values."

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko conferred the rank of Hero of Ukraine to Bandera on January 22, 2010.
