The growth of the level of corruption in Ukraine is one of the achievements of the current government, the Regions Party has said.

According to Regions Party deputy leader Hanna Herman, Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko could be one of those to suffer if the mechanisms for fighting corruption the government has proposed are applied to the premier herself.

Earlier, Premier Yulia Tymoshenko, speaking live on the Black Sea Television and Radio Company, called for stronger penalties against corrupt officials, up to and including imprisonment for life.

"Sometimes I envy China, where they put people to death for corruption," Tymoshenko said.

According to various studies, over the last five years Ukraine has become one of the world’s most corrupt countries.
