You're reading: Yanukovych: Talk of censorship in Ukraine being used for political point scoring

Talk of censorship in Ukraine is merely political point scoring, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"Tell me who prevents you [journalists] from writing the truth? Give me the surnames, name such companies and their owners. I have so far received no reply. Discussions are being held around this. I think that this is just one of the methods playing politics," he told reporters on Wednesday while attending the Sorochyntsi Fair in Poltava region.

Yanukovych said that he was the person in Ukraine most interested in the absence of censorship in the country.

"You won’t find any person who is more interested [in the absence of censorship] than me," he assured, adding that he would like to be a partner for the media. Yanukovych said that only free people whose rights will be protected would feel happy in Ukraine.

"I want and wish my children and grandchildren to live in such a country," he said.
