Ukrainian prosecutors say they have filed new corruption charges against embattled former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who already is banned from leaving the capital as part of a separate probe.
Prosecutors on Thursday charged Tymoshenko with illegally procuring 1,000 vehicles for alleged medical use, then using them for campaigning in last year’s presidential election, which she narrowly lost to President Viktor Yanukovych.
Investigators say the vehicles were not equipped to transport the sick. Instead, they were used to drive around activists from Tymoshenko’s party, costing the nation 67 million hryvna ($8.4 million, €6.1 million).
Tymoshenko insists the charges are false and part of Yanukovych’s campaign to silence the opposition.
