Moldova's prime minister on Thursday promised that the country would continue reforms aimed at its integration with the European Union.

"We will remain on the difficult path of European integration, and with support from the European Commission we will be fulfilling our commitments to reform the country and come closer to EU standards.

It is a difficult path but we stand ready to traverse it to the end," Vlad Filat told a briefing after a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who arrived in Chisinau on Thursday for a visit several hours long.

"The ambitious program that the government has adopted will be carried out," Filat said, and "Moldova will become part of the large European family."

Ashton promised the EU would continue to help Moldova integrate with the Union. On her visit program, she had meetings with Filat and the other two leaders of the ruling Alliance for European Integration, interim President Marian Lupu and Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu.
