Kyiv on Sunday, August 31, held a funeral for 2-year-old Angelina and her 24-year-old mother, Nadiia Halich, who were killed under the rubble of a five-story building during a Russian missile and drone strike on the night of August 28. Photographer Marco Pereira was on the scene and captured the ceremony.
Several hundred people attended, including residents of the destroyed building and neighboring homes, relatives, friends of Nadiia and her husband, Maksym, and former classmates.
Near the building in the Darnytskyi district, an impromptu memorial was set up, with flowers and toys brought by mourners.
The Aug. 28 attack on Kyiv was one of the heaviest of the war, officials said. The Darnytskyi district suffered the most damage, with a five-story residential building destroyed.
According to the State Emergency Service, 22 residents of the building were killed, including four children, and three more died elsewhere in the city.
The memorial project “Killed by Russia” published the names of those who died, including Angelina and her mother, whose deaths have become a symbol of the war’s toll on families.
