You're reading: Appeal filed against Ukrainian Literature Library ex-head Sharina’s sentence

Defense Lawyers have challenged the sentence of former Ukrainian Literature Library director Natalya Sharina, who earlier received a four-year suspended prison term on extremism and embezzlement charges, Sharina’s lawyer and Team 29 chief Ivan Pavlov told Interfax.

“We have submitted an appeal against the sentence that the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow handed down to our client,” Pavlov said on June 13.

“The uniqueness of the Sharina case is in the fact that all the irregularities that we will mention in the court of appeal are so evident that it would take more than just closing eyes, it would take pursing conscience to fail to see them,” Pavlov said.

On June 5, Moscow’s Meshchansky Court found Sharina guilty of extremism and embezzlement and handed her a four-year suspended sentence. Sharina then maintained that she had done nothing she was convicted with, describing the sentence as politically charged.
