The Russian government, Facebook, and Twitter are discussing the localization of data of Russian users in Russia, and the government will be persistent in this regard, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov told reporters during the inter-regional meeting “Digital Development Leaders” on Friday.

“We will insist that data be localized in the territory of Russia. We are considering these issues and maintaining a dialogue with these companies [Facebook and Twitter]. We will pursue this policy persistently, but in a way that avoids destroying the basic services for users,” Akimov said, replying to a journalist’s question about Facebook’s and Twitter’s localization of Russian users’ data.

Sanctions on Facebook and Twitter are not being discussed at this point, he said.
